Are my self-storage items covered by my contents insurance? Is a question we are sometimes asked by our customers and the answer is not as straightforward as it seems.
A lot depends on the kinds of items you are storing, for how long and how you will be transporting them. 90% of home contents insurers will insure your possessions while they are in transit but in the vast majority of cases they will expect you to be using a professional removals firm.
A small minority of insurers will add insurance for goods in transit as an optional extra, so it is worth checking the small print to make sure you are covered.
Once the good have arrived and have been packed away in a self-storage unit there will be cover offered up to a certain value by the self-storage company itself, but for peace of mind with expensive items it may be best to make sure goods have the correct level of insurance that will compensate for any losses.
It is important to remember that goods in self storage will be safer than when they are stored in an empty house over long periods as extensive security is in place 24 hours a day.
If you have any questions about security and cover for your items while in storage, our staff will be happy to advise.
